Master’s Student Muhammad Habibullah Galih Tri Aji Contributes a policy brief to G20 Brasil 2024

Muhammad Habibullah Galih Tri Aji, a master’s candidate at the Graduate School of Sustainability Studies, University of Toyama, has significantly contributed to the policy brief titled “Advancing Climate-Resilient Oceans for Global Food Security.”

This document, released as part of the Think 20 (T20) Brazil 2024 initiative for G20 Brasil 2024, articulates the multifaceted challenges posed by climate change to terrestrial and marine ecosystems, with a concentrated analysis of its implications for global food security.

The brief emerges from collaborative efforts among a diverse panel of experts, including Alfi Bella Kurniati (Universiti Malaysia Terengganu), Jing Zhang (University of Toyama), Geetha Mohan (Global Research Centre for Advanced Sustainability Science, University of Toyama), Genevieve Donnellon-May (Asia Society Policy Institute, Australia), and Cherry Hitkari (University of Delhi).

The brief highlights the critical need for protecting marine environments, which encompass approximately 70% of the planet’s surface and are indispensable to the health and livelihoods ofmillions globally.

Current trends in unsustainable resource exploitation and pollution are substantially degrading the functionality of these marine ecosystems, particularly under the pressures of climate change.

Coastal populations, particularly in developing nations, face heightened vulnerability to food insecurity exacerbated by climate-induced disruptions.

To address these pressing issues, the brief proposes a comprehensive framework encompassing four fundamental strategies: leveraging and establishing locally-managed marine protected areas to enhance ecosystem recovery, advocating for G20-led international collaborations aimed at providing financial assistance and capacity development for coastal communities, promoting sustainable fisheries management practices to ensure the long-term health of marine ecosystems, and ensuring robust participation of women in decision-making processes to foster inclusive climate policies.

Ultimately, the brief calls for an integrated global initiative to safeguard marine ecosystems, which are critical to ensuring food security on a global scale.
