Vice President Ikeda Visits National Taiwan University

On July 22, 2019, Vice President Ikeda and three other staff members of University of Toyama (UT) visited National Taiwan University (NTU).

The predecessor of NTU was Taihoku Imperial University (TIU), founded in 1928. NTU is the most prestigious comprehensive university in Taiwan and is placed 1st in Taiwan and 170th in the world for academic reputation (Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2019). It currently has six campuses and consists of 11 colleges, 56 departments, 112 graduate institutes with a total of more than 30,000 students.

The delegation made a courtesy call on Executive Vice President Ming-Syan Chen and they discussed potential collaboration in a wide range of fields between the two universities. Vice President Ikeda also took the opportunity to donate the first doctoral diploma with a serial number of one his grandfather-in-law had received in 1938 when studying at TIU. Vice President Ikeda was presented a certificate of appreciation by Executive Vice President Ming-Syan Chen in return.

After the meeting, the delegation toured the gallery of NTU History and learned about the NTU’s history. They also met the Department of Life Science’s Prof. Chen-Tung Yen and Ming-Yi Chou, as well as School of Veterinary Medicine’s Prof. Fang-Chis Chang and talked about the UT student’s participation in the summer camp which will be held by NTU’s Neurobiology and Cognitive Science Center every summer.

Then they met the Department of Agricultural Economic’s Prof. Pei-ing Wu and Prof. Shin Hsun Hsu. In recent years, NTU’s Department of Agricultural Economic and UT’s Center for Far Eastern Studies have co-organized several international conferences. Besides co-organize the conferences, Vice President Ikeda express hopes to develop more student exchange opportunities with the department.

This official visit will hopefully be a good opportunity to further develop relations between the two universities.
