School of Economics

To Learn Broadly, Deeply, and Practically

At the School of Economics, students can gain wide-ranging knowledge by studying economics, business, and law in an interdisciplinary way. This helps them learn to think flexibly and come up with creative ideas to solve problems from new perspectives.
We also offer a program that teaches basic data science skills. Students learn how to use data to understand and solve real-world problems in business and society, based on a strong foundation in the social sciences.

Developing Individuals Who Can Excel in the Real World

Dean of the School of Economics

Today, the social environment is changing rapidly, and the pace of change is getting even faster. As a result, the problems we face in communities, businesses, and society as a whole are becoming more complex and diverse. There is a growing need for people who can help solve these problems. To develop such people, it is important to provide both deep specialized knowledge and broad, cross-disciplinary understanding. In addition, students need to learn how to think based on data and evidence, rather than relying only on experience or intuition.

To support this kind of learning, the School of Economics reorganized its structure in April 2024. The previous three departments were combined into one: the Department of Economics and Business. Within this new department, we offer three programs: Public Policy, Business Management, and Economic Data Science. A key feature of these programs is that students can study across the three main areas of social science—economics, business, and law. No matter which program students choose, they can also gain basic skills in data science through a well-structured curriculum.

Through learning that combines social sciences and data science in the newly redesigned Department of Economics and Business, we hope students will grow into people who can solve real-world problems and make meaningful contributions to society.
