School of Humanities

A Place for Intellectual Exploration to Deepen Understanding of Humanity

The School of Humanities at the University of Toyama is one of the most unique departments in Japan because of its diverse course offerings and majors. It has 8 courses and 21 majors in the fields of philosophy, history, linguistics, sociology, psychology, East Asian literature, English-language literature, and European literature. This unique structure offers opportunities for students to access a wide variety of knowledge beyond their major field and enables them to take interdisciplinary approaches to their own research with critical perspectives. Some of the faculty members provide courses focusing on Japan, such as literature, films, linguistics, history, and comparative cultural studies. The faculty members dedicate themselves not only to cultural and linguistic education at the University of Toyama but also to opportunities for focusing on communication with local communities in Toyama.

Developing Essential Skills for the Present

Dean of the School of Humanities
Tomoki Ito

In modern society, complexity is accelerating, and various problems and challenges are emerging one after another. However, it is precisely in such times that the need for each individual to think about what kind of life they want to lead and what kind of society is desirable is increasing.

The Faculty of Humanities offers a variety of academic fields, providing opportunities to thoroughly consider these important questions based on their respective intellectual traditions and unique perspectives. We aim to nurture individuals who, while choosing a specialization that suits them, advance their studies, train and experience thinking and generating ideas on their own, learn about human strengths and weaknesses, and continuously think about their way of life and the desirable form of society.
