School of Medicine

With the Philosophy of Integrating Eastern and Western Medicine

With the theme of merging Eastern and Western medicine in mind, we aim to develop highly motivated students who will become proficient physicians and nurses. The School of Medicine has two departments: The Department of Medicine and the Department of Nursing. The School of Pharmaceutical Sciences is also located on the same campus, allowing close communication and cooperation. The Department of Medicine has introduced integrated curricula for each internal organ as well as small group discussions based on problem-based learning. The Department of Nursing provides high-grade education with an emphasis on the integration of humanity and science.

Message from the Dean

Training Medical Professionals to Excel Locally and Globally

Dean of the School of Medicine
Takashi Nakagawa

The Faculty of Medicine was established in 1975 as the Faculty of Medicine at Toyama Medical and Pharmaceutical University, and became the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toyama in 2005 following the reorganization and integration of national universities in Toyama Prefecture. In 2025, it will celebrate its 50th anniversary, having produced over 6,400 graduates from the Department of Medicine and the Department of Nursing, who are active both locally and globally.

The Department of Medicine, as the only physician training program in Toyama Prefecture, provides medical education in accordance with international standards, cultivating physicians with the latest knowledge and skills, high ethical standards, and warm humanity, contributing to regional healthcare. Additionally, it conducts cutting-edge research in a wide range of fields such as neuroscience, infectious diseases and immunology, pre-disease and aging research, training medical researchers who can excel globally and contribute to the advancement of medicine.

The Department of Nursing offers a unique educational curriculum that allows students to obtain three qualifications: nurse, midwife, and public health nurse, which is rare nationwide. Graduates of the Department of Nursing are active not only within Toyama Prefecture but also in medical institutions, government agencies, and universities across the country, and can become highly specialized advanced practice nurses by pursuing graduate studies.

Furthermore, the Sugitani Campus, where the Faculty of Medicine is located, is the medical and pharmaceutical hub of the University of Toyama, housing the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the University Hospital, and the Institute of Natural Medicine. By promoting the integration of Eastern and Western medicine and interdisciplinary collaboration, it creates new value in education, research, medical care, and social contribution.
