The education is offered through a variety of disciplines ranging from traditional medicines to the life sciences. Let’s Study Pharmacy in “Toyama, the City of Medicine”!

Dean of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences
Yuji Matsuya
Toyama has a history of over 300 years in medicine and is known as the “City of Medicine” due to its concentration of pharmaceutical companies and industries. The Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Toyama is the only pharmacy faculty in this historically rich area, training professionals in medicine known as “Yakushi” (pharmacists).
The slogan of our Faculty of Pharmacy is “The Noble Peaks: Challenge to Become a Yakushi.” In Toyama Prefecture, the high Tateyama Mountain Range stands tall, inspiring a sense of challenge in people. On the southern side of the range is Mount Yakushi, which seems to symbolize the goal of studying pharmacy and becoming a “Yakushi.” The “Noble Peaks” represent the many challenges in studying pharmacy, and the slogan expresses the challenge of reaching the goal of becoming a “Yakushi.”
The Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Toyama has two departments: the six-year Department of Pharmacy and the four-year Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The Department of Pharmacy aims to train pharmacists who know and appropriately use medicines, mainly working in hospitals, pharmacies, and pharmaceutical regulatory agencies. The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences aims to train researchers who know medicines and create new drugs, mainly working as researchers in pharmaceutical companies and chemical manufacturers. Both departments focus on training professionals in medicine who contribute to human health, with a strong emphasis on medical professionalism and research capabilities.
Why not aim to become a “Yakushi” in the historically rich “City of Medicine,” Toyama? Our Faculty of Pharmacy always welcomes those who are eager to study pharmacy and become active as pharmacists or pharmaceutical researchers. We look forward to meeting you all.
