Exploring the Principles and Laws Governing Nature

Our school is dedicated to exploring the fundamental principles and laws governing nature. Through cutting-edge research, we aim to cultivate individuals with specialized knowledge and problem-solving skills. To foster the ability to address problems from a broad perspective, we require students to take foundational courses outside their major fields. Additionally, we are committed to building an educational system that meets the needs of the times, including lectures on scientific English by foreign teachers and e-learning.

Message from the Dean

Welcome! To the School of Science, University of Toyama!!
Dean of the School of Science
Kouhei Matsuda

Until the 2023 academic year, this faculty consisted of five departments: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Environmental Science. However, today we have entered a new era where broad knowledge in various fields of natural science is required to address changes in industrial structure due to digital transformation and solve environmental problems. Therefore, to cultivate individuals with novel problem-solving abilities, such as the ability to judge and act in various situations, this faculty has been reorganized into the School of Science with six programs (Mathematics Program, Mathematical Informatics Program, Physics Program, Chemistry Program, Biological Sciences Program, Environmental Science Program) from the 2024 academic year. In the new School of Science, we will provide education that fosters the ability to solve problems from a broad perspective using interdisciplinary knowledge and data science, based on fundamental academic skills and specialized scientific knowledge in science. Furthermore, each program will have an international course to cultivate individuals who can acquire language skills and internationality and play an active role globally with a global perspective. Under this new framework, after enrollment, students will first receive liberal arts education and basic specialized education unique to each program to cultivate broad knowledge and rich humanity. After that, at the end of the first year, students will choose the program they are most interested in from the six programs and receive further specialized education. As the culmination of their undergraduate studies, in the fourth year, students will work on their graduation thesis and develop the ability to solve problems through research and exploration activities to unravel the mysteries of the unknown mechanisms of nature.
Let’s learn together in the new School of Science!
We look forward to your enrollment from the bottom of our hearts.
